The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is currently
accepting applications for the 2001 GLAAD Dissertation Fellowship Program.
Two awards of $5,000 each will be given to support the study of media and
representation as it relates to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
people. Applications are due by July 1, 2001. Fellowship recipients will
be announced in September.
Now in its second year, the GLAAD Dissertation Fellowship Program aims to
foster and promote scholarship as a vital form of intellectual activism.
The program solicits proposals for original, creative, and rigorous
research on the cultural, institutional, economic, social, and political
dimensions of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender representations, and
the ways in which such representations are generated, interpreted,
mobilized, and contested in a variety of genres and contexts, including
historical and cross-cultural work. At the present time GLAAD-sponsored
research focuses on trends relevant to media in the United States, though
research proposals which include cross-national comparisons will be
considered.
Examples of possible research topics include (but are not limited to):
… the effects of the >economic and social organization of media industries
on representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
… the formation and development of independent media sectors by and for
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
… the reception of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender television
characters by a range of audience groups
… public opinion on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues
… the development and political intervention of anti-gay media campaigns
… the social and cultural significance of the erotic press for lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgender people
… media coverage of legislative reform in contemporary and historical context
… media images of AIDS activism and of people with AIDS/HIV
… representations of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people of
color in entertainment or news media
… the ways in which lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues of
equity and diversity have been addressed in contemporary or historical
media contexts
… youth-oriented images of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people,
including such educational materials as textbooks and classroom videos
… queer cultures in cyberspace
The GLAAD Dissertation Fellowship Program encourages disciplinary and
methodological diversity, and thus seeks proposals from the humanities,
social sciences, public health, public policy, education, and allied fields.
To be eligible, applicants must be currently enrolled in a doctoral
program at a U.S. institution and must have completed all pre-dissertation
requirements by the proposal deadline.
