Gender, Social and Cultural Geographies
Second call for papers Belfast 2002, apologies for cross-posting
Postgraduate work in progress is invited on the topics within gender, social
and cultural geographies.
All current postgraduate students, masters and research,(including those
outside of 'Geography) are invited to submit an abstract for a full day
session entitled "Gendered, Social and Cultural Geographies" at the annual
conference of the Institute of British Geographers in Belfast 2-6th January
2002. Postgraduate students from outside the discipline are also welcome to
submit abstracts. The session is jointly sponsored by the Women in Geography
Study Group and the Social and Cultural Geography Reading Group.
This session is designed to enable postgraduate students to present papers
in a supportive environment within a main session of an international
conference. The session will hopefully provide a forum which encourages
constructive debate and enables you to explore your ideas with interested
collegues. It is hoped that it will draw on the exciting work which is
being undertaken in either Gender, social or cultural geographies or any
combinations of these.
Anyone who considers their work broadly within gender gegraphies/ social
geographies /cultural geographies is invited to submit an abstract.
Work in progress concerning issues around the following broad themes is
envisaged but not limited to:
*what are gendered geographies, social geographies, cultural geographies?
Where have they been? Future directions?
*Intersecting gendered and/or social and cultural geographies
*difference and diversity including but not restricted to gender,
sexualities, race/ethnicities, disabilities, class and age and other
interlocking systems of difference
*social inclusions/exclusions
*geographies of home, reproduction, consumption, body, work,
cyberspace etc.
*bodies, identities, spaces and places
*performativity
*interpretations, uses and appropriations of feminisms
*theory into practice, practice into theory
*methodology and ethics
We hope to be able to offer some funds to support postgraduates who wish to
participate in this session, however these will not cover the entire cost of
attendance. Details of bursaries will be available at a later date.
Abstracts should be approximately 200 words, clearly stating the title,
author(s) names and contact details. Please send abstracts via email (as an
