To paraphrase into modern English "King's Highway" or "Main Road". Some (but
by no means all) are Roman roads - most of the latter are "straet" (>strata)

Further to Steve's comment, "Eth" or "barred-d" is Alt-208 (cap) or Alt-240
(lower-case) on a PC keyboard: type them with Number lock on using the
numeric keypad, and holding down the left-hand alt-key -- but this will not
work sending plain text to the e-group!
