Discussion point
================
The intarch-interest list has been quiet of late so I thought I'd try to
kick start some discussion.
http://www.iop.org/free2001/time
The Institute of Physics has recently made all the current issues of its
journals available _free_ to non-subscribers. The issues are only
available free when complete, whilst subscribers can view articles as soon
as they are published. It's an interesting model and I wondered what
Intarch-interest list members thought of it. I don't think such a model
would work for a journal like IA (even after refereeing and text markup
and image work, preparing the datasets to work over the web can take
weeks, if not months), although I could see a model like this taking off
for more immediate 'newsy' kinds of content. What do others think?
Web site of the week
====================
If you visit no other web site this week, then point your browser to
http://www.capitolium.org
This website contains reports about the excavations of the Imperial Fora
in Rome but also has games and a range of virtual tours. In particular,
the section on 'How Rome Was' offers clickable real and reconstructed
views of Rome, and one section even allows users to operate the motorized
cameras to explore 'live' the views from the Palazzo Senatorio! Thanks to
Damian Robinson from the ADS who suggested this site.
If you have a great archaeology site like this to suggest, then send your
suggestions in!
Journal Subscriptions
=====================
Internet Archaeology has embarked on its second year of institutional
subscriptions. The first year was very successful, and we easily surpassed
our target number of 20 subs from UK HE institutions (and several have
purchased a 2001 subscription already). Given that there are just 28
universities with Archaeology departments in the UK, we are pleased with
this positive start to our drive to become self-financing now that our
eLib funding runs out in the summer.
The journal's subscription model and price (100 UKP / 180 US dollars for
_permanent_ access to the issues published in a year) have been welcomed
by many university librarians. IA is a university-based, not-for-profit
journal, and we have not changed our institutional price for 2001, which
is incidentally much lower than institutional subscriptions to many print
archaeology journals.
We are soon to turn to other groups of journal users for subscriptions,
specifically educational establishments in North America and elsewhere
(.edu. domains). Access will not be barred to these institutions for a
while yet (dates will be announced in due course) but should they wish to
secure seamless access to the journal, these institutions are free to take
out a subscription out at _any_ time.
In fact a few universities from outside the UK have already taken up this
opportunity. So, please do pass this url onto your library rep to set up
seamless access to the journal for your institution .. wherever you are!

Advertising
===========
You may also have noticed that Internet Archaeology is now accepting
advertising as part of the self-financing process. The linked banners load
(ranadomly) at the top of the journal homepage. Those banners already
placed with the journal have had several thousand impressions each since
they appeared at the start of January.
If you/your institution/your company might be interested in taking out
some advertising space in Internet Archaeology, see
http://intarch.ac.uk/advert/index.html for more details.
If you have any comments about the journal, advertising / revenue
generation, or if you have other relevant information about archaeology on
the web that you would like to disseminate to the other members of
intarch-interest, then please do send them to the list.
regards,
Judith
