Dear all:
This isn't about disability, but is often thought to be so. I hope that
some of you find this worthwhile. I know some of the people involved with
ISNA and they are great people.

INTERSEX SOCIETY OF NORTH AMERICA (ISNA) INTERNSHIP
If you want an internship where all you do is make coffee and photocopies, look
elsewhere! If you want to change the world, this is the internship for you! We
will involve you in everything we do! (And we don't drink much coffee anyway--
our work keeps us jazzed up!)
About ISNA: ISNA is a national non-profit organization working to end shame,
secrecy, and unwanted genital surgery for people born with atypical sex
anatomy. ISNA has accomplished a dramatic increase in the visibility of
intersexuality; no longer must intersex people and their families suffer in
isolation, believing themselves to be "the only one." In the medical realm,
ISNAs work has been nothing short of stunning. Many specialist clinicians now
seek our help as they work on reforming their teaching and practices. Rarely
in the history of medicine has direct patient advocacy been so effective in
shifting oppressive medical treatment of a stigmatized population. For more
information about ISNA and intersex, visit www.isna.org.
Deadlines: Applications must be received by ISNA by postal mail or e-mail by
April 6, 2001. We will conduct phone interviews April 9 - 13. We will notify
the selected applicant by April 16.
Starting and Ending Dates: May - August (there is some flexibility on the
exact start and end dates)
Pay: $8/hr, 40 hr/week for 12 weeks
Location: Our office is in a 1910 Victorian house in downtown Petaluma (1 hour
north of San Francisco). We are a small but growing organization with two full-
time staff.
Description: Do you want an internship where you can really make a difference?
ISNA is changing the world on a daily basis. You can be an important part of
this work. Your responsibilities would include member outreach and support,
writing for ISNA publications, and helping to keep the office running. In
addition, you would choose a specific project to focus on. With only two
fulltime staff, we may be small, but we are very effective and technologically
sophisticated. You would have the opportunity to learn about all areas of non-
profit work, including advocacy, fundraising and media activity. Through this
internship, you would become a well-known intersex activist with many great
contacts with the media, doctors, social workers, and national leaders in
intersex and queer activism.
You can learn skills that are highly valued by non-profits and other fields;
depending on your interests, you can learn:
*How to write effective brochures, letters, and articles
*How to use databases to get important information for running your business
*How to use the Internet for activism and fundraising
*How to target messages to particular audiences, including doctors, parents,
intersexed people and students
*How to work with the media to get coverage that supports your work
Projects: You can choose from these projects or suggest your own
*Create a diversity outreach program
*Design and coordinate project that would involve and inspire volunteers in
the Bay Area
*Help kick-start our online giving and e-commerce efforts
*Write materials about intersex targeted to specific groups (LGBT orgs,
parents, classroom materials)
Requirements: Must make a full-time 12-week commitment during the summer.
Applicants must be college or graduate students with an interest in activism,
and must be computer literate, self-motivated, excellent writers and
hardworking.
How to apply: Please mail or e-mail a cover letter explaining why you want to
work for ISNA, your resume, and a writing sample. Please let us know where you
can be reached between April 9 and 13 for a phone interview.
