medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Seidel and UC colleague M. Camille have been profitably in the
overinterpretation business for quite some time. I rarely see a shred of
hard evidence to support such post-Freudian interpretations except the
"feeling" that it must be so. Such interpretations go against the plain
meaning of much Christian imagery (however repetitive and boring) and any
scheme that disregards that (assuming it is understood in the first place)
needs to defend itself on every page.

The one thing I distinctly remember about the book was
Seidel's interpretation of Judas' right hand with his
two forefingers (?) pointing out and the others folded
back as a "stand-in" for the erect penis of anyone
dying by hanging. Having looked at the capital both in
situ and in books, it seems to me that J's hand is in
a blessing gesture and that Seidel's interpretation is
far-fetched in the extreme. I'm not an art historian
so Christopher may be interested in my very humble
opinion. I might add that I realize my interpretation
will probably strike some as bizarre.
