Children and libraries: improving the fit
A one day Library Association workshop on 5 June, in London
Library services for children have changed beyond all recognition since the
days when they had to show a clean pair of hands before being allowed over
the hallowed threshold. Yet recent research about libraries and social
exclusion shows that many children and their parents and carers are still
unaware of libraries' benefits.
While few library staff need convincing of the value of children's services
many would feel more confident that they could support children and young
people effectively, if they had greater understanding of their needs and of
current practices in pre-school, primary and secondary education. Many have
had little training in library promotion or customer care with children.
Benefits from attending
This workshop provides an opportunity to explore the role of public library
staff in supporting children's social and educational development and
effective strategies for promoting libraries and their resources to children
and young people from nought to fourteen.
By the end of the event participants will have:
* explored the value and potential of children's library services
* looked at the inter-relationships between home, pre-school, school
and library provision
* increased confidence when helping children, parents and carers
* ideas for promoting effective and continuing library use
* extra strategies for exploiting children's library resources
effectively
Who will benefit from attending?
Librarians and library assistants who work, or would like to work, with
children and young people. Not appropriate for heads of children's library
services.
Workshop leader
Anne Harding. Anne is an independent trainer and lecturer, specialising in
training education and library staff about children's reading and library
services to children and young people.
