Hi all
Sorry to resend. I realised that I may not have made myself clear enough
when I said the "disabled person/ person with a disability" discussion. What
I mean is the "person first" terminology compared to the "disabled first"
terminology.

Subject: need examples of bad media reporting
Hello everyone
I am to introduce new students to the idea of the language of disability. I
believe I have some good guidelines on appropriate language (from media
guidelines) but I want to present examples of any media reporting (or any
reporting) where representation or portrayal of people with disabilities or
disability itself is disturbingly bad. I would like students to scrutinise
and identify negative connotations in the language used, as a class
exercise.
I hope to be able to demonstrate the importance of language and the impact
it has on people's lives to remediate students' resistance to what is
sometimes perceived to be just political correctness. I have found this
perception to provoke cynicism in students or accusations that "we" are
promoting "labelling" or "separatism". (they are not disability studies
students)
I am also looking for a way to introduce the "disabled person/ person with a
disability" discussion: just to show that language and identity are not
fixed or universal constructs. If anyone can give me direction with this, I
would be most gratefull.
btw. Congratualtions to those involved in the Disability with Attitude
Conference. I can only attend conferences held in Sydney so its a double
bonus when its as good as the DWA Conference.
Best regards
