I seem to remember seeing similar electronic equipment being used on some
underwater archaeological sites where paper tends not to last long.
It could have been the Mary Rose, but not sure, a site that was very damp
John Wood of still rather wet Sussex

I have seen adverts for laptops designed, originally, for military use
which are claimed to be waterproof, dustproof and capable of withstanding
impacts. Battery life for such machines is improving. On a wet dig these
would seem to have the edge over paper and the data can be downloaded to a
desktop machine thus saving a lot of time.
