Not strictly true. The Local Authorities are being pressured by central
government to undertake vast amounts of effort on such things as Best Value
- not per se a bad thing. But the resource to enable this is not
forthcoming, and a glance at the adverts for associated posts will show how
much this is costing. Estimates of more that £95million have been made - and
rising. There are restrictions on the ability to raise taxes, and thus LAs
are in a situation of constantly trying to do more with less for higher
expectations. CG vaunting free admissions to museums without recognising the
pressures on LA museums is misleading.
