By way of example, a very very senior and widely published
archaeologist was in a (museum) curator's office. He had an
unpublished excavation from twenty years ago. He said sadly "I
always meant to publish, but there was always something more
interesting to do instead." Though respect is due to him for his
honesty and his courage in raising the subject, I think he is still
under an obligation to archive/publish as best he can after all this
time, or let someone else do it.
The excavation remains unpublished.
