This may not be what you're looking for, but it is possible to add
some simple metadata to the PDF document itself. Fields like
Title, Author, Keywords, etc. These probably aren't much use for
general web searching, but there are some search engines, such
as Verity, which will display this information in a hits list. I suspect
though that they index the PDF documents from their text rather
than their metadata.
You can add information to these metadata fields manually via
Acrobat Exchange. If you get into writing programs to manipulate
PDF it is possible to populate these fields in some automatic way.
It is also possible to add more fields, so presumably you could add
DC fields. There are also tools available from third parties to
perform these functions.
