If you're after basic readings on the Rood, you may want to start with Stanley
B. Greenfield and Daniel J. Calder, _A New Critical History of Old English
Literature_ (NYU Press, 1986). They describe some of the major interpretations
and offer a wonderful bibliography. For background reading on Rood, you may
want to try Lapidge and Godden, eds. _The Cambridge companion to Old English
literature_ (Cambridge University Press, 1991) and Henk Aertsen and Rolf H.
Bremmer, Jr., eds. _Companion to Old English poetry_ (Amsterdam : VU University
Press, 1994). John Pope's _Eight Old English Poems_ (Norton, 2001) contains an
extensive commentary on the Rood. Recent work on Rood can be culled from the
annual bibliography in the Old English Newsletter.
