Caesarius of Arles (d. 542/543) complained about the members of his flock
who used to make "a little sign" of the cross as a protective charm when
they tripped while on their way to commit some misdeed, going to the
theatre or (I think - I don't have the text handy) before eating food used
in sacrificial offerings. Martin of Braga (d. 580), on the other hand,
wanted his people to use the sign of the cross to chase away malign spirits.
