Actually Danny I don't mind the concept of NHSDirect. At least I no longer
have to advise punters about their medical conditions over the phone, and I
used to detest that. I'm not trained or qualified to give telephone advice
about patients I can't see, and over the years I was horrified to see my
first year SHOs attempting this practice, often taking considerable time
over the process! Moreover, the whole concept of a punter sitting at home
and getting instant advice, while real patients waited for hours in the
department, incensed me...and this was a frequent occurrence in my
department. OK, we may now end up with a few more patients, but hopefully
with a lot less time on the phone. And at least we can properly assess real
patients, and they are counted as workload, unlike telephone calls which
generally aren't.
