Mediated Worlds: representations of Latin America in the UK
25-26 April 2001; Senate Room, University of Liverpool
The Institute of Latin American Studies, Liverpool, is
organising this conference to explore the many ways in
which Latin America is represented in the UK. The aim of
the conference is to analyse the ways in which Latin
America is currently portrayed, as well as assessing the
developments over time and suggesting ways forward for
future engagement with Latin America. In recent months we
have seen a wave of TV programmes in Britain focusing on
Latin American nature and history but little that has
discussed political events despite some remarkable changes.
Thus, with this backdrop, there will be challenges to the
assumptions behind the reporting and commentary that takes
place on the region in the mainstream print and broadcast
media. The conference will have six sessions. The first
two, on Wednesday 25 April, will cover reporting Latin
American politics and economics for the UK press where
journalists will give their perspectives on reporting the
region. Sessions three to six on Thursday 26 April focus on
The Written Word, Popular Culture and Visual Culture. The
conference will be rounded off with a round-table
discussion by media workers. There will be speakers from a
broad range of backgrounds. Hugh O'Shaughnessy, long time
writer on Latin American affairs, will be giving the
plenary on day one. Journalists speaking include The
Guardian's Diplomatic Editor, Ewen MacAskill, Financial
Times Americas Editor, Richard Lapper, radio commentator
and journalist Isabel Hilton, Colin Harding (Latin American
Newsletters) Kier Radnege (World Soccer) and Mike Reid (The
Economist). Translator and writer Nick Caistor,
photographer Amanda Hopkinson and Eva Tarr, organiser of
the Latin American Film Festival, are also participating,
as well as a number of academics including Dawn Ades,
Patria Roman Velázquez and John Gledson. Discussants and
chairs include James Dunkerley, Jon Beasley-Murray, Kay
Richardson and David Hojman.
The conference will take place in the Senate Room in Senate
House at the University of Liverpool on 25-26 April. For
