BEGINNERS: FOLLOWING THE NEWS IN GERMAN
A guide to using online German sources to read the news, sports
and weather. Yes, even beginners need to read "real" German! This
week's article offers tips and strategies to help beginners and
advanced beginners to get on line and expand their vocabulary.
These tips also work for non-beginners, of course. If you don't know
the name of Boris Becker's American wife, or what "BSE" is, it's
probably because you don't follow the German media. But the point
is NOT that you know about the Beckers' messy divorce! The point
IS that you know the German word for "divorce" or "get a divorce"!
Few if any German textbooks will teach you such vocabulary, or
any of the current WORTSCHATZ found in the German media
today. Another advantage of using authentic German sources is...
well, go to this week's article to find that out!

GERMAN VOCABULARY IN THE NEWS
This brand new glossary of current events terms is presented in two
versions: German-to-English and English-to-German. You can look
up terms from German or from English. If you are reading the news
in German, you can look up an unfamilar German term in the
"Vocabulary in the News" glossary. But if you'd just like to know
what the German is for "mad cow disease," you can also look it up
from the English. With your help, we'll continue to expand this
glossary, adding terms that come up in current events in the future,
or other terms that need to be added.
