Dear Colleagues,
Please publicize the following course to interested parties who you may
know on the West Coast (U.S. West Coast) and on any social
science/disability lists that you have access to. The course instructors
represent the fields of psychology and medical anthropology respectively.
Both incorporate a social model/disability studies perspective in their

SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY
NEW COURSE, SPRING 2001
HMSX 678 DISABILITY AND SEXUALITY
Instructors: Linda Mona, Ph.D. and Russell Shuttleworth, Ph. D.
This course aims for a psychological, social, political and cultural
analysis of diverse factors of sexual well-being, sexual health, sexual
representation and sexual oppression of disabled people. We will
especially examine how social structures and cultural meanings affect the
individual in their sexual interpersonal relationships. Historically,
disability and sexuality research has often been conducted from a medical
model perspective, which omitted the voices of disabled people
themselves. More recent work on disability and sexuality moves beyond a
medical model perspective and incorporates the social experience of
disability and explores diverse issues of sexuality from a wide range of
theoretical viewpoints.
Course content will be presented through lectures, small and large group
discussions, and films\videotapes. In addition, members of the disabled
community and experts on topical areas will be invited to present and
participate in class discussions.
Students with reasonable requests for accommodation related to
disability, illness, or other circumstances must contact the instructor
as soon as possible. Accommodation to disability in an educational
setting provides disabled students with a reasonable degree of additional
resources, time or assistance to enable access to learning and campus
resources that are otherwise available to all students.
