Two queries off-list in the 20 minutes since I posted my original
mention of calendars prompt me to give better biblio, and sorry to all
for previous brevity:
Calendars north of the Alps, but Germany in particular are best sought
at:
Hermann Grotefend, _Taschenbuch der Zeitrechnung des deutschen
Mittelalters und der Neuzeit_, ed. Thomas Ulrich. Hannover, Hahnsche
Buchhandlung, 1971 (11th [!] edition -- there may well be one or two
subsequent, need to look, and I don't see an ISBN here, so I obviously
need to look to see if I'm up to date).
I apologise because this work seems unknown to some -- wrongly so,
surely, if we need to know about local observance? If your library
doesn't have this key reference, why not? It's helped me. In spite of
the German title, which may put some off, the layout makes this dead
easy to use, and I for one wouldn't be doing without it (said he in
broad Lancastrian).
If you ain't got it, get it and cuddle it! It's nice!
Angus, Oman
