Subject: OSI UEP seeks lecturers for short-term program / Istanbul
Dear All,
Please find below offer of teaching positions from UEP/OSI New York
Best wishes
Dmitri Vlassov
The Undergraduate Exchange Program (UEP) is currently recruiting faculty to
teach
the following subjects at the Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) in Istanbul,
July
7-14, 2001:
* American History
* Cultural Anthropology
* International Relations
* Literature
* Media Studies
* Political Science
* Essay Writing
*
* The UEP is sponsored by the Open Society Institute (OSI) in New York and
awards grants to university-level students to do one year of non-degree
study in
the US in the humanities and/or social sciences. In the summer before the
students
arrive in the US, OSI hosts the PDO to introduce the students to teaching
methods
and the university system they will encounter in the US. Students are
expected to
participate in class and complete all assignments before each class period.
Instructors will have five days of teaching and one day free. Each class
session
is an hour and fifteen minutes in length and you should plan on teaching 3
sessions
a day. There are a total of 75 grantees, with classes ranging in size from
15-20
students.
*
* The course in essay writing is compulsory for the students and should be
designed as an introduction to American essay writing techniques.
*
* The other courses should focus on one area of the topic rather than
attempt
an overview, due to time constraints. We particularly encourage proposals
on
topics related to civil society and/or the open society philosophy - for
example:
women's studies, minority issues, human rights, the democratic/electoral
process,
press/media freedom, social/community activism. Courses can be focused on
the
United States and/or on the students' region (Eastern/Central Europe, former
Soviet
republics and Mongolia).
*
* If you are interested in teaching a course in one of the above fields,
please submit the following to me by March 31.
*
* A description of the course, including the goals of the course.
* A lesson plan for each day with reading assignments and topics to be
covered.
* A short CV describing your educational and professional background.
Thank you in advance for your interest. If you have any questions prior to
March
31st, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Best regards,
Alex Irwin
