Hi
My name is Elsebeth Muff and I'm employed at the Social Development Center
SUS in Copenhagen, Denmark. SUS is an independent, non-governmental and a
non-profit organisation that undertakes social development projects,
evaluation and initiatives dealing with groups at risk and socially excluded
people. The endeavour is aimed towards groups at risk among the mentally
disabled, refugees, immigrants, persons with learning difficulties, children
and youth. SUS is involved in national and international projects and
participates actively in various international networks.
SUS has been provided with funding to look into the issue of sexual assault
of disabled people. In a danish context this is a new policy area - there
has never been an investigation on the subject nore has there ever
systematically been collected experience about best practice in relation to
preventing assault from happening and/or supporting survivors.
To me this is also a new research area - that's why I'm asking people on
this mailing list to help. The research articles from England, Canada and
USA that I've read indicates, that sexual assault might be a serious problem
in Denmark as well. We are not going to make a national inquiry into the
issue in Denmark. Instead we will try to learn from the research made in the
mentioned countries. Especially we are interested in experiences concerning
'good' or 'best practice'. First step is to collect material (articles,
safety guides, education material, examples on good practice as well as
examples on not so good practice etc) from researchers, projectworkers,
people with disabilities etc. in other countries with the purpose of
learning from their experience. I hope that some of the people on this
mailing list will share some of their information and knowlegde with me.
Without any luck I've tried to locate a paper written by Turk & Brown 1992
at a danish library. Does anybody have a copy?
Best regards
Elsebeth Muff
