Greetings dear hearts, especially Cheryl.
Welcome to the wonderful world of the VLE :-)
The first thing you'll need to work out is precisely WHAT you want your Care
Studies VLE to do.
For example: -
You may wish to deliver tuition via the VLE - either for discrete blocks of
the course or as part and parcel of the whole package
You may wish to provide background materials to support the students who
receive their main teaching by traditional classroom methods
You may wish to use the VLE to administer quizzes, tests and assessments for
the students
You may wish to use it as a 'jumping off' point to facilitate their own
studies by providing links to useful reference material on the Internet (and
within your college library, particularly if you can link up to your OPAC)
These are just some of the things you can do, and they are not mutually
exclusive, you can do all of them if that's what you want!
If you want to teach via the VLE, do you intend the students to work through
the material provided in their own time, or will they come in for timetabled
sessions, with the tutor available to direct them through the material
provided and to ask questions?
Will you provide them with a discussion area (chat room or bulletin board)
where they can work together, share ideas and ask questions - perhaps with a
tutor looking in to pick up and respond to queries or correct things that
have been said?
On the more 'mechanical' side, how many of the tutors involved in the course
are sufficiently computerate to create their own learning materials for the
VLE, and how many will need training or assistance? How many of the students
are sufficiently at home on computers to be able to find their way around
the VLE? Do you have the kit resources for students to have adequate access
to the system to undertake the work you intend them to do via the VLE?
(Guess who tends to teach by the Socratic method!)
These are some of the things that you need to get clear in your mind as you
embark on your project. Good luck, and you know where to find us to discuss
aspects of your work as it develops.
Hugs and kisses,
Megan.
