Realising Potential: Mentoring Makes a Difference
An Athena Project Seminar
Tuesday 18th September, 2001
At Bolton Institute

The Athena Project
The Athena Project is a UK–wide initiative funded by HEFCE, and the
other UK Funding Councils, the DTI and Universities UK. The project aims
to improve the access, participation and promotion of women in science,
engineering and technology (SET) in Higher Education.

In 1999 Bolton Institute was awarded one of the first tranche of Athena
Project Development Grants. The funding supported a pilot mentoring
scheme for female staff and students in SET. The scheme proved to be
great success with increases in career development skills,
self-confidence and motivation being reported. It also demonstrated a
very clear willingness amongst senior women in SET to help other women
fulfil their potential.
Some typical quotes from participants of the mentoring scheme:

‘Incredibly useful. A wonderful project. I have gained a great deal and
would recommend it to any woman’ - mentee

‘The project is very useful and critically important for the development
of women in SET. It should be implemented in every university and at all
levels!’ - mentor

This one day seminar is an opportunity to :
* Share best practice of mentoring women in SET
* Learn about the Universities UK’s new Equality Challenge Unit
* To hear first hand experiences of mentoring
* To influence a new inter-university mentoring scheme

The seminar will be of interest to all those wishing to realise the full
potential of their staff. For example,
* Senior Managers
* Human Resources Managers
* Staff  Development Officers
* Equal Opportunities Officers
