The Department of Science and Technology Studies, University
College London, seeks undergraduate teaching replacement in the
history, philosophy and social studies of the life sciences during
staff leave.
Openings include two courses September to December 2001 and
two courses January to March 2002. All courses include
examinations in May 2002. Renewal or additional courses are
possible for September to December 2002. Compensation includes
GBP2,200-2,700 per course (plus 12% NI) and use of university
facilities as a visiting fellow.
Application can be made for any combination of courses.
Courses may follow titles currently on offer (HPSCB115,
HPSCC216, HPSCC217, HPSCC320, HPSCC329), using new
or existing content.
Alternative advanced courses may highlight other themes within the
life sciences, provided they complement the department's existing
curriculum. For this opportunity, 'biology' is broadly construed to
include any discipline within the life, social, and human sciences in
any geographic range, preferably c1700 to the present. It excludes
medical sciences as covered by historians in UCL's Department of
Anatomy and Developmental Biology.
Prospective applicants should submit a curriculum vitae (including
teaching experience), contact details for two references, and a short
prospectus for courses proposed (aims, objectives, and description
of content) no later than 15 June 2001. After initial screening, high
ranking candidates will be asked to provide full course syllabi,
references will be contacted, and candidates will be interviewed
either in person or by telephone. Candidates proposing to replace at
least HPSCB115 will be preferred.
Candidates must be legally employable in the UK; UCL will not
sponsor a work permit for this replacement. PhD is preferred but
not required.
Materials should be submitted on paper to Dr Joe Cain,
Department of Science and Technology Studies, University College
London, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT. For additional
information, visit www.ucl.ac.uk/sts/cain/apply.htm
or contact Dr Cain via [log in to unmask] or +44.20.7679.3041.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss course
proposals with Dr Cain prior to submission. The Department and
UCL is committed to a policy of equal opportunity. The Department
offers three undergraduate degrees in its field, with roughly seventy
students currently enrolled.
