The SciPer project [Science in the Nineteenth Century Periodical] is
seeking an Historian of Medicine to supplement our existing
research team. We need someone who has worked extensively on
a nineteenth-century British topic and who possesses (or should
shortly gain) a PhD in that area. Experience working with
periodicals would be an added advantage.
One of the main aims of SciPer is to construct an electronic
database of the rich scientific (including medical and technological)
content of a range of nineteenth-century general periodicals. When
completed the database will thus enable historians to locate the
scientific content of, say, Punch, or the Edinburgh Review or the
Evangelical Magazine. Members of the project are also researching
the encounter with science of different readerships, and we expect
this research to shed fresh light on the understanding of ST&M by
diverse publics. More information can be found on our website:
www.sciper.leeds.ac.uk
The project, which is directed by Geoffrey Cantor and Sally
Shuttleworth, is highly interdisciplinary, being based in the Division
of History and Philosophy of Science at Leeds University and the
Department of English Literature at Sheffield. To date it has
received funding from the AHRB, the Leverhulme Trust and the
Modern Humanities Research Association, which has enabled it to
employ four post-doctoral researchers.
Anyone interested in pursuing this potential position for an
Historian of Medicine should contact me as soon as possible.
