I seem to have missed the original enquiry here, however, if good words
about MS Exchange are required I'm happy to supply them. We've been running
it (v 5.5) here at Nottingham for several years now using Outlook (currently
v. 98) as clients. It's been pretty much trouble free, integrates well with
our Anti-Virus software and generally is easy to administer. We have about
30 users set up on it, including several internal e-mail distribution lists.
The only regular problem is to one remote site that links in through the
local authority's awful 64k network. Hopefully this will be upgraded to 10MB
this year and the e-mail will be as good out there as on the museum network
proper.
The central diaries, contacts, etc. are very useful, though it's true to say
that only a handful of users make proper use of them yet. I would be lost
without it. Shared mailboxes and roaming profiles make it even more useful
if you're - dare I say it? - hot-desking.
