The following course is organised by CLAUD (Librarians in Higher Education networking to improve

library access for disabled users in the south and south west of

England) and the Access Unit, Department of Disability studies,

University of Bristol.

"Can I help you?"

The Non-disabling library

A course aimed at frontline library staff who come into contact with

disabled users in the Library.

Tuesday 18th September 2001

9.15 a.m. - 4.45 p.m.

Burwalls Conference Centre,

University of Bristol

About this Course:

This course will provide an opportunity to discover the most

appropriate way for frontline library staff to interact with disabled clients. We will discuss

attitudinal barriers and how to overcome these by improving staff

communication and behaviour. Advice on sharing this knowledge with your

colleagues will also be provided. This day will be of interest to frontline staff in all

library sectors - public as well as academic.

This course will involve:

Interactive sessions with space to learn from each other's professional

experiences. There will be time to share individual ideas and develop

group thinking in a non-threatening environment. The day will provide

an opportunity to examine how we engage with the complex needs of

disabled library users.

Your Tutor:

The course will be lead by Elisabeth Standen, a disabled woman who has

worked with a wide variety of disabled people, in both local authority

and academic settings. Elisabeth has recently joined the Access Unit as

a Disability Equality Trainer and the Development Officer for a project

aimed at increasing participation by disabled people in Further and

Higher Education in the Somerset region.

The course will be of particular interest to:

Frontline library staff who come into contact with disabled users and

who want to improve their interactive skills. The day will also

provide advice on the most suitable methods for passing on this

knowledge to your colleagues who are unable to attend.
