The eighth and seventh centuries B.C. were a period of major settlement
change all across the Mediterranean. Archaeologists have been tempted to
talk of 'urban' forms, and to postulate changes in social and political
organisation in which they associate the new settlement forms with changing
relationships between settlements and countryside and with the origin of
the state. As the evidence available increases, the questions of the
relationship between these settlements and the settlements that preceded
them, and more particularly of settlement forms in one place to settlement
forms in another place, have become more acute.
This conference brings together leading archaeologists from across the
Mediterranean to survey the current state of the evidence and to review the
issues involved in its interpretation.
