Dear All,
As suggested by Martin Pratt, below is a brief introduction to the rest of
the members of the distribution list.
My name is James Kavanagh and I am currently employed as Geomatics executive
within the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Parliament Square,
London. I am a qualified Land Surveyor (studied in Dublin & London) and have
worked in many areas of the world even during my relatively short career. I
suppose my first real experience of boundaries, international & political
was during the three years I spent working in the Gaza Strip & West Bank, I
was part of the Irish governments support package to the Palestinian
Authority, through UNRWA, with a brief to map the sprawling refugee camps
and train some local surveyors. Without wanting to go into too much detail,
this experience really gave me a strong insight into the geo-political
context of what we as mapping professionals were doing and how our work
affects the general population. I suppose that is really the attraction of
this subject, the interweaving and connection of socio-economic, the legal
and the political with the technology and practice of modern surveying.
Something, I believe we here in the UK, due to no coherent internal
cadastral system, have missed out on in some way.
Also, from an institutional point of view, many of our professional members
are involved in boundary determination of one sort or another, and there is
a great source of professional interest in the subject. It is therefore
important that we try to keep up with developments in this area and even try
perhaps to arrange joint events, lectures, articles on the subject. More
info on the RICS can be found at www.rics.org.
Thanks and I look forward to my future involvement with the list.
Kind Regards
James
