Announcing GIS-Wales ([log in to unmask]) (with apologies for
cross-posting)
GIS-Wales is a forum and discussion vehicle for all things relating to
geographical information systems in Wales.
It aims to help the GIS community:
* with technical problems relating to GIS and spatial data;
* find the right data for specific problems;
* announce conferences, workshops and GI initiatives in Wales (& those
in GB that may be of interest to subscribers in Wales);
* the teaching of GIS in schools, FE & HE;
* discuss issues relating to processing the 2001 Census (and the need
for a "Welsh" check-box);
* discuss issues relating to specific GIS software;
* share experiences of solving GIS problems; and
* discuss research news and GIS articles worthy of note
It allows the Welsh GIS community to request and distribute information in
an informal environment which promotes collaboration. Funding, job and
conference adverts will also be posted regularly.
The list aims to capitalise on the rapid growth of GIS in Wales. It also
reflects the "devolution" principle of a regional list (separate from the
likes of gis-uk).
There are many new GIS initiatives in Wales, that we as academics and
researchers can capitailse on - including WDA, Welsh Assembly, and AGI Cymru
programmes. This year's GIS Research in the UK conference is co-hosted by
Glamorgan and Cardiff Universities, with Swansea also contributing
(http://www.comp.glam.ac.uk/gisruk/gisruk.html). We want to capitalise on
this interest now.
We would particularly like to see the list used by the post-grad geography
and GIS communities in Wales. The list should also appeal to archaelogists,
environmentalists, geoscientists, planners, computer scientists, and all
potential users of digital spatial data.
To join the list, simply send an e-mail to [log in to unmask]
<mailto:[log in to unmask]> and in the body of the message type:
join gis-wales your-first-name your-last-name
Messages can then be posted to the list by sending an e-mail to

Hope to see you soon,
Diolch yn fawr,
