Dear all
Quite a number of people have recently joined the list (we're now at 432)
and holidays are approaching, so I thought it would be useful to remind
people of a couple points of etiquette that make use of the list smoother
for all of us.
* If you are going away and setting an auto-respond, ensure you suspend
mail from the list first (go to
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/wa.exe?SUBED1=gem&A=1 and click the box
'Mail delivery disabled temporarily'. When you're back, return to the page
and unclick the box). If you're away for a long period but not setting an
autorespond it's still good practice to suspend mail from the list. You can
catch up via the archive at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/gem.html.
I have previously warned that people who have set autoresponds but not
suspended mail may find themselves removed from the list. If you come back
and find you've been removed, just rejoin (and remember to suspend mail the
next time!).
(You can suspend and resume mail directly by e-mail if you want rather than
using the web form. User documentation with summaries of all commands
available to you as a user is at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/docs/default.htm)
*If you are responding to a specific question on the list (as opposed to a
discussion point) reply in general directly to the sender and not to the
list, unless you think the response will be of interest to a significant
number of people on the list. If someone else desperately wants the answer
to the question they can of course e-mail the original sender to find out
if a response was received.
