Overview

Speech Prosody 2002 will be an international conference aiming to bring
together researchers working in all areas of the field of speech
prosody. It
will provide a natural forum for scientific exchange both for established
workers in the field and for those who are new to the area and wish to get
up to date on this exciting and rapidly expanding field.

The conference is organised by the Laboratoire Parole et Langage, CNRS,
Université de Provence, Aix-en-Provence under the aegis of SProSIG, the
Speech Prosody Special Interest Group, with the support of The International
Speech Communication Association (ISCA) and JST/CREST.

The conference will be held in conjunction with the ISCA international
workshop Temporal Integration in the Perception of Speech (TIPS)
http://www.lpl.univ-aix.fr/~tips/

Format

Duration: three days (Thursday, Friday and Saturday).

The conference will be organised in nine sessions with one oral session each
morning one each afternoon, and one poster session held in the
middle of each day. There will be no parallel sessions.

Each oral session will be organised around a specific topic and will consist
of

   * a keynote lecture
   * two invited discussions
   * general discussion
   * selected submitted oral presentations

There will be a coffee/tea break in the middle of each oral session.

Poster sessions will be held in the middle of each day. These sessions are
designed to allow participants to divide their time as they wish between the
posters, lunch, discussion and resting.

Oral-session topics and keynote speakers

Call for papers

Papers are invited presenting original work in any area of the field of
speech prosody. The majority of accepted papers will be presented in the
poster sessions which provide more opportunities for discussion.
Participants will be invited to indicate whether they wish their paper
to be considered for oral presentation in one of the six oral sessions.

The deadline for submission of a full 4 page text for the meeting has
been extended to December 7, 2001.
Please note that only full texts will be considered for presentation.
Please do not send abstracts.

Papers will be reviewed by at least two anonymous referees under the
responsibility of members of the International Scientific Committee and the
local Organising Committee.

Registration

The cost of the workshop is expected to be in the region of 200 Euros. This

NATO International Scientific Exchange Programmes
ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE
Dynamics of Speech Production and Perception
June 23  July 6, 2002
Il Ciocco, Italy

Applications for participating in a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on the
Dynamics of Speech Production and Perception are being solicited. The
objective of this ASI is to expose young scientists from diverse disciplines
to facts, theories, and issues related to speech dynamics. It will survey
both classical and contemporary speech research from the perspectives of
articulatory phonetics and physiology, auditory perception of speech and other
dynamically changing signals, neurophysiology of the central auditory system,
spoken language processing, and speech technology, with dynamic processes as
the common focus. The ASI will include lectures by established scientists,
round-table discussions, demonstrations, and poster presentations by
participants. The language of the ASI will be English. Lecturers will include
René Carré (France; articulatory and perceptual phonetics, speech acoustics,
gesture theory), Pierre L. Divenyi (USA; psychoacoustics), Steven Greenberg
(USA; spoken language processing, auditory physiology), Hynek Hermansky (Czech
Republic and USA; speech recognition, signal processing), András Illényi
(Hungary; acoustics), Björn Lindblom (Sweden; linguistics, speech physiology,
speech perception), Valeriya V. Lublinskaya (Russian Federation; speech
perception, speech physiology), Georg Meyer (U.K.; computational neuroscience,
psychoacoustics), Israel Nelken (Israel; auditory physiology), Roy Patterson
(U.K.; models of hearing, psychoacoustics), Louis Pols (The Netherlands;
perceptual phonetics, speech acoustics), Elliot Saltzman (USA; articulatory
phonetics, complex systems analysis), Shihab A. Shamma (USA; auditory
physiology, computational modeling), Victor N. Sorokin (Russian Federation;
control theory, acoustics, speech production), and Klára Vicsi (Hungary;

Participants are expected to specialize in one or more areas related to
speech, such as phonetics, speech technology, experimental psychology,
physiology, and acoustics. Individuals who have recently completed or are near
to completing their studies at institutions of higher learning are encouraged
to apply, although applications by scientists of more senior standing could
also be considered under special circumstances.
Although the ASI is primarily directed to citizens of NATO, Partner, and
Mediterranean Dialog countries, qualified scientists from other countries may
also apply.
There is no registration fee. Selected participants who otherwise would be
unable to attend, especially those from Partner countries, may apply for
partial subsidy to defray their accommodation and travel costs. The number of
participants is limited.

The ³Centro Internazionale Il Ciocco² (http://www.ciocco.it/), situated in the
Apennines north of Lucca (Tuscany), is an ideal venue for intensive workshops.
It is a quiet mountain resort with first-rate conference facilities,
comfortable rooms, excellent Italian food, as well as modern recreational and
sport amenities. Interested individuals should send their application by
e-mail before January 15, 2002 to [log in to unmask] The application should
include (1) contact information, (2) a recent Curriculum Vitae, (3) a list of

of Linguistics, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Psychology,
Audiology & Speech Sciences, Computer Science, and the Institute of
Hearing Accessibility Research, the Brain Research Centre, and the
Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive
Systems). Interdisciplinary collaborations integrating these areas
have been at the focal point of major funding organisations and also
feed directly into high-priority teaching areas such as the new
Cognitive Systems program at UBC. As part of these initiatives, we are
seeking a world-class senior researcher who has attained international
recognition as a leader in the investigation and modeling of speech

Rhetorical Systems is looking for a native Italian speaker to join them on a
new Italian-language text-to-speech system.

We are an innovative company dedicated to the building of high-quality
text-to-speech systems. Following the successful completion of a multi-lingual
system, we are now embarking on a second phase of adding new languages. One of
these languages is Italian.

We seek an enthusiastic person with solid knowledge of the phonetics and
phonology of Italian. Experience with previous text-to-speech systems is
desirable but not required. Experience in using computers is essential,
preferrably Linux or another variety of Unix.

Text-to-speech systems work by cutting up human speech into small segments,
and recombining them to produce new utterances. Some of the variables in this
process are the choice of segment, the duration of the segments, and their
pitch. These quantities are established using automatic algorithms, guided by
expert phonetic knowledge. It is your skill in this area that will define the
quality of the resulting synthetic speech.

The appointment is for one year initially, with the possibility of renewal
afterwards.

If you are interested, write to us telling us about yourself, at one of the
following addresses.

A new PhD program is available at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in
Applied Language and Speech Sciences.

The program is based in the Department of Communicative Disorders and, while
it is partly aimed at qualified speech-language pathologists seeking a
doctoral qualification, we are also interested in students from an applied
linguistics or phonetics/phonology background.

Coursework is available in theoretical semiotics, advanced phonology, and
phonetics, among others; and dissertation supervision in a wide range of
phonetic and linguistic topics.

Please see more details on our web site:
http://www.ucs.louisiana.edu/~jxo1721/Research/ALSSPhD.htm

Please note, funded assistantships are available in competition.
We are particularly keen to encourage international students.
