MEDIA FORUM (June 22-27, 2001)
Organizers: <Interfest>, Center for Media Art and Culture <MediaArtLab>
The sites of Media Forum:

Cinema theater "Illusion", All-Russian State Library of Foreign Literature,
Central Manage

This is the second year when Media Forum is organized in the frame of the
Moscow International Film Festival, and, as the result of the acceptance of
the role of new media in audiovisual art and culture, it was immediately
introduced in the official program of MIFF and offers special accreditation
to the guests, participants and journalists who are over 300.
This forum is the first event of such a scale in Russia, and it reveals a
new sight at the world of new media culture and new screen technologies to
the professionals, viewers and critics.
The task of Media Forum is to show the connection between traditional and
modern branches of screen culture, the impact of technological innovations
on visual arts.

This year Media Forum includes the following parts:

i. Festival program

"MultiVideo"
International festival of video art. Videos based on synthesis of different
genres and technics are in priority.

<CyberMovie>
Festival of Internet art projects associated with new forms of screen shows
on the web.

<Telepresence by Extension>
Special program where the most popular for the moment mass media TV meets
the advanced new media art. Different forms of their mutual appropriation
will be welcome.

 ii. Presentational programs

<Montage of Attractions>
- Representation of interactive screen art which reflects inter-relations
between avant-garde cinema concepts and trends in development of new media
art
- Retrospective showings of world video art masterpieces from international
collections
- Presenattion of Anthology of Russian video art, project by MediaArtLab

iii. The International Conference "Access to Excess" in the frame of the
Media Forum of the XXIII Moscow International Film Festival, June 24-26,
2001

The core problem of the conference: how to organize effectively the process
of cultural and historical valorization (term by B.Groys, i.e. estimating
quality of product and making reasonable its value) of media art content
under the present conditions of information over-production. Among
participants of the conference organized in collaboration with the
All-Russian State Library of Foreign Literature are supposed to be
representatives of media art centers and archives, festivals, project
runners and researchers from Eastern and Western Europe, America, Asia and
Russia. The conference will highlight several basic problems of media art
collections and events development:
- Effective models of distribution and promotion of media art
Curators of media art collections, organizers of media art festivals,
presentational and educational programmes, initiators of online resources on
media art on the Internet from different countries will present their
projects, share experience, and discuss different problems related to
searching for adequate and effective ways of presentation of new forms of
digital arts and the use of new technologies in the process of distribution
and promotion.

- Methods and policy in the field of preservation of media art works
The actuality of the problem of preservation of media art works has grown
during the last years. It's derived from the fact that media art works,
especially produced in analogue formats, start to lose their quality quite
soon since the time of their production. The basic aspects of the problem
are: appropriated formats of the storage of media art works, preservation
and restoration of media art works, transference to other, different from an
original one, formats, conservation of network and Internet based art
projects.

- Intellectual property and copyright in the era of digital economy:
How artists, curators, and other professionals, from one side, and audience,
from the other, can benefit in "the era of digital reproduction" from the
use of advanced, first of all, Internet technologies?

- Online databases: architecture, content development, platforms for
integration:
Experience and perspectives of development of online archives and museums of
media art, as well as other related information resources. Database as a
network project.

III Moscow International Film Festival 2001

Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF) is held since 1959 and year by
year it has been becoming one of most respectable and prestigious
film-forums in the world. In 1973 MIFF was registered by international
Federation of Film-producers associations (FIAPF) as the <A> class alongside
with film festival in Berlin, Cannes, San-Sebastian, Karlovy Vary and
Venice.
