1. Conference - Electronic Imaging and the Visual Arts

26-30 March 2001, Florence, Italy

EVA Florence 2001 'Electronic Imaging and the Visual Arts' runs from 26
to
30 March 2001. The annual event includes a conference, training sessions
and
a workshop, and should provide a forum for the user, supplier and
scientific
research communities to meet and exchange experiences, ideas and plans.

This year, EVA is supported by the European Commission's EVAN project in

association with the Electronic publishing information focal point
(EPIFOCAL) and will provide up to date information on new EU and
international arts computing and telecom initiatives. It includes case
studies of leading edge applications in museums, galleries, libraries
and
education, integrated digital archives for cultural heritage and modern
art
and the impact of new technology in conservation and education to global

access.

The event expects to attract senior representatives of the cultural
sector,
especially the visual arts community, government, media and related
sectors,
the ITC industry, tourism and technology and visual arts research
organizations.

In addition, an open conference focused on protecting digital assets
will be
held on the final day. The session will feature presentations on
security
and watermarking and copyright access and licensing.

The EPIFOCAL project is funded by the Interactive Electronic Publishing
sector of the IST programme.

2. Conference - Information Society Technologies in CIS

19-21 April 200, Kiev, Ukraine
Deadline for applications: 1 March 2001

The Commonwealth of independent states (CIS) participation in and
benefits
from the Information society technologies (IST) programme of the
European
Union's Fifth Framework programme (FP5) will come under the spotlight at
a
forthcoming kick off conference in Kiev, Ukraine from 19 to 21 April.
The
conference concerns new methods of promoting the IST programme to the
Commonwealth of independent states. The conference will focus in
particular
on 'teleworking in research, medicine and business'.

Submissions of abstracts are already being requested for the event,
which
should be sent in English (not exceeding one page) to the e-mail address

below before 1 March.

3. Conference - How to keep up with the information society

7 March 2001, Brussels, Belgium
Deadline for registration: 26 February 2001

Conscious of the need to explain some of the mechanics of how the
technologies concern work and how the European Union's Information
society
technologies (IST) fits into this, a conference on 7 March in Brussels
organised by the IST Diffuse project, will explain some of the issues
concerned and what to expect next.

One of the European Commission's major goals is to use the information
society to increase employability of its citizens and reduce social
exclusion. But this will only be possible if all the citizens are aware
of
and comfortable with the technology that is
being introduced.

The ability to access information on the world wide web, regulatory
issues,
use and development of wireless services, rights issues and use of
interactive television services all feature on the agenda, as will
progress
in relevant IST programmes.

The Diffuse project is actively collaborating with the IST C-ECOM
programme
to provide an open platform within the European standardisation
environment,
in the hope that it will lead to more effective e-commerce
standardisation.
The C-ECOM will hold its own conference the day after Diffuse, in the
same
location.

The target audience for the conference is research communities,
standards
developers, application developers and ICT service providers.

Attendance is free.
