Free Training Workshop - Designing Flexible Digital Representations of
Historical Source Materials
Saturday 1 December 2001, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Reynolds Room, Wivenhoe House
Hotel, University of Essex, Colchester, CO4 3SQ. Free Registration.
The workshop is intended for anyone interested in the creation of digital
representations of historical source materials. No prior experience of
digital resource creation is required, but a moderate level of computer
literacy will be necessary to gain full benefit from the workshop.
The workshop will discuss the methodology of creating digital
representations of historical source materials. It will focus on the
digitisation process (in a broad sense) and the relationship between the
source and the resulting digital representation. The workshop will
articulate and demonstrate those standards and elements of good practice
that are relevant to a wide range of data creation situations, from student
projects through to large-scale research projects.
The workshop is intended to present an overview of the issues involved in
the design of digital representations of historical sources. Specific
software packages and data modelling techniques will not be discussed in
detail. The workshop will not present hard and fast rules, but rather
guidelines which creators are encouraged to adopt, adjusting them to their
own needs and situation.
