Can I just add a bit.
Often, it's not always the 'attractive packages' - i.e. a job can be well
paid, and a 3 year contract is very good by short contract standards - AND a
new venture like Peterborough is almost certainly bound to end up being made
permanent - BUT the location of jobs can put people off.
Having just got married and thinking of mortgages, cars, kids etc. location
is a big issue. Money is a very big issue, as are hours, travel expenses
etc. I live in Reading, and have been looking at job possibilities in
London, Oxford, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, even Hampshire at one point (so
not that restricted!!). But without a car (even with a car sometimes the
journey is too much to contemplate), and commitments at home - jobs offered
in Wales, Scotland, Midlands, even if they are good like that in
Peterborough - are out of my reach unless I want to start all over again in
terms of finding somewhere to live, travel etc. May be in the far future,
but not immediately and it also depends on what my husband does too - I
can't very well say 'I'm going for a job in Edinburgh ok?' and expect him to
do the same with his work!!
I took a big pay cut to gain better experience in my current (although
temporary) job, and it has helped me enormously, so sometimes it does pay to
take a step down, but it's not always the LACK of archivists, it's often the
fears involved with making a major move. Even people on their own don't
always want to move from where they live - probably why there is often few
applicants for jobs, despite a decent package - and YES temporary, short
term contracts can put people off too - especially if permanent and well
paid means paying the bills more easily and getting a mortgage!!!
I think enough has been said! Don't want to get all depressed now - It's
FRIDAY!!!!
That's my bit! Have a good weekend!
Ivone.
