thanks to all those who replied to my request for a program to carry out
decision or risk analysis, as at the moment i am only interested in drawing
the graphical trees, no decisions will be made on the figures, as the
outcomes in the data set are already fixed. If anyone knows of a simple
package that will do this , please let me know , i could always use a word
processing package and a calculator!!

You will see some of the replies relate to specific products - i have just
forwarded the replies to the list and as i have not examined all the
options yet cannot comment on any - apart from the general comment in the
first paragraph

1.Books on Excel produced by Thomson learning (Duxbury) have Excel bolt-ons
which come free with the books on eof which has a decision tree module.
Since the books cost about £25 getting the bolt-ons (which also include
other useful bits and bobs) is a bonus.
And, no, I am not a Thomson Rep.

2. Check out Paul Jensen's page at UT Austin at:
http://www.me.utexas.edu/~jensen/jensen.lib/index.htm
It appears that he has an add in that does what you want with decision trees.
Paul is a friend of a friend who pointed out that it was a site well worth
visiting. Note that the add ins are free. He develops them as part of his
teaching and shares them at no cost.
Regards,
Doug Matheson

3.I'm not sure exactly what you want, but the CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic
Interaction Detector) creates a tree based on a binary response, such as
Disease / Non-Disease, with splits defined by your covariates (e.g. exposure
to hazard etc.). It can also cope with multi-level responses (such as no
disease, mild disease, moderate, severe). I'm a bit out of date with this
but a good start would be SPSS - they used to provide CHAID and Ansatree
packages but I heard on the grapevine that they've merged these.
I would be very grateful if you could summarise your responses for me, as
I'm looking for something similar, although my application is quite
different - direct marketing campaigns!
Regards, Paul.

4.Just in case you were not aware, we produce a product called Answer Tree
You should find info - www.spss.com/answertree/
Click on the "order now" link and then select "UK" and this should give you
some price information - without comitting yourself to buying anything.
I have to say I do not know of any excel add-ons.
It would be interesting to see a summary of responses.
Hope this helps

5. In case no-one else mentions it, you may be interested to know that
STATISTICA includes a very comprehensive and up-to-date classification
(decision) trees module. See
http://www.statsoft.com/exploratory.html#classification for more
information.
Unfortunately this comes as part of a larger system and cannot be purchased
alone, but we do have some good academic price deals.
Please let me know if you wish to discuss anything further.

6. You can take a look at www.treeage.com or alternatively you can build
your own tree in Excel. There are a number of add-in to Excel to run
stochastic analyses. Two of these are Crystal Ball
(http://www.decisioneering.com/), and and @risk
(http://www.palisade.com/). These websites provide all the details
about their acquisition cost, demo versions, etc.
Good luck
