Dear colleagues,
At this moment we are trying to start a discussion among Dutch
archeozoologists about standardization. One of the topics is a standard
code for archaeozoological data entry. One of the first questions to emerge
is ‘which data should this standard code have to contain at a minimal
level’. We think that one requirement of such a code should be its
international appliance. It would make it a lot easier to exchange
information internationally.
But is there any international agreement on what should be the minimum
basic data we have to record (species, type of skeletal element and number
of bone fragments will probably pose no problem, but what about weight,
traces of burning or cutting and pathologies, etc).
Does anybody know if such an agreement has ever been made or suggested
anywhere? Does anybody has any thoughts about this topic?
Thanks,
Joyce van Dijk
