Dear All,
I am organizing a session on the exploitation of animals
fats for ICAZ 2002 (Durham UK). I would like to invite
people to contact me off-list if they would be interested
in giving a paper.
I envisage a session with wide coverage of this topic
demonstrating the many ways in which animal fats have been
important to past societies. Here is a non-exhaustive list
of the sorts of things I am thinking of: exploitation of
bone marrow, bone grease, marine mammal blubber, fish oil,
milk fats; the exploitation of animal fats as an important
part of diet; use of fats and oils in craft activities; use
of fats and oils as fuel; trade in fats and oils;
ethnoarchaeology of animal fat exploitation. I would also
be interested to hear from people using a variety of
methods to study such issues (e.g. study of bones, chemical
residue analysis, palaeoentomology, ethnography and
historical sources, functional analysis of material culture
etc.). Period is entirely open.
