Dear all,
Thanks for your responses to my query about a search engine that would search
static html files on CD in the same way as a webcrawler - ie heading tags,
meta tags, images etc. This was for a set of study guides based on an
intranet site - we wanted to allow students with computers to study them at
home.
There are several javascripts freely available, (eg
http://www.earthweb.com/redirects/javas
cript_4.cgi) which involve building the database yourself. This therefore is
not a solution for searching large groups of files, or content that changes
regularly. However, the javascript I have chosen has been very helpful, and
provided a solution of sorts.
The (freeware) Wilbur-CD indexing tool was also suggested
(http://wilbur.redtree.com). I can think of several uses for this great
tool, but since I wanted to search content rather than file names, I haven't
used it for this particular problem.
Thanks for everybody's input, if anybody has anything to add, I am all ears.
