Many university External Relations/Marketing departments spend very
large sums of money trying to present a consistent visual identity
across their public material such as job adverts, recruitment adverts,
prospectuses, press releases etc etc. Having a strong, recognisable
logo/colour/etc can be very useful and powerful, and this is used to
great effect in the commercial world. As universities have to operate
in that world, I can understand their frustration when a department
does their own thing, whether in print or, as in our area of interest,
on their public Web sites, and dilutes or undermines their (expensive)
efforts.
I'm not saying that I therefore support the idea that all public Web
pages on a Uni Web site must have the strong corporate visual identity
treatment, but I certainly think that some basic levels of visual
consistency are desirable.
Best wishes,
Adrian
