I think part of the issue is where it goes.
One of the reasons we allow staff to do this is because it helps to
develop their web skills - this is a personal development issue, and it
also means the university has a better chance of having experienced staff
available than if they have nowhere to practice. The fact is that people
who are free to mess around with a subject that interests them are more
motivated to learn than if they have to use specific learning materials.
I'm sure noone outside a company would be interested in the staff social
club or the staff christmas party or the staff cricket league, but most
companies have them and allow a very small percentage of their resources
to be devoted to it. But for obvious reasons they don't put this on the
public website.
I don't see a problem with this provided that staff/student personal
information is strictly differentiated from work - ie it is not linked
from official pages, is properly disclaimed, etc etc.
