Getting Started with Virtual Learning Environments
Monday 25th June 2001, University of Bristol

A one day conference focusing on the embedding and
effective use of Virtual Learning Environments in UK HE.
The event will include demonstrations of Blackboard.
Many UK universities have now moved beyond the evaluation
stage of Virtual Learning Environments and are ready to
implement and use their chosen learning environment. This
one day event will deal with the main issues of
implementation, incorporating themed parallel sessions
covering strategy, pedagogy and technology. There will
also be a session highlighting four examples of good
practice.
Speakers include:
* Dr Gilly Salmon, (MBA Program Director, Open
University, UK and USA)
Area of expertise: moderating online discussion.
* Sandy Britain (Research Fellow, University of Bangor)
Area of expertise: pedagogical evaluation of VLEs and
interoperability and standards.
* Dr Joanna Bull (CAA Centre, University of Luton)
Area of expertise: plagiarism.
* Sarah Porter (Programme Manager, JISC Committee for
Integrated Environments for Learners)
Area of expertise: Management of VLEs
* Dr Bob Hunter (Director, Learning Development Unit,
University of Birmingham)
Area of expertise: supporting the institutional embedding
the technology.
* Professor Mark Stiles (COSE Project, University of
Staffordshire) Area of expertise: pedagogical models of
online learning.
The day will include plenaries, discussion and paper
sessions as well as an exhibition.
This one day event is hosted by the Learning and
Technology Support Service, part of the Institute for
Learning and Research Technology, at the University of
Bristol. The ILRT hosts 35-40 projects and services, with
over 70 members of staff. Projects include from LTSN
Economics, SOSIG, Biz/ed, Virtual Med. Image library
Bristol Biomed. The ILRT and LTSS co-hosted ALT-C along
with JISC and CTI at Bristol in 1999.
The conference fee is £125. All conference sessions will
take place at the University of Bristol, Veterinary
School and Kingsdown Conference Centre, Southwell Street,
Bristol BS2 8EJ.
