Collaboration is a key to the success of VLEs and the Jisc funded projects
of the DNER learning and teaching programme actively support the
collaboration between academic staff, learning technology developers,
library staff, computer staff within institutions and across institutions.
Worth looking at (if you have the time!) is the research and in particular
some of the learning and teaching materials being produced through the Jisc
funded projects of DNER (Distributed National Electronic Resource) Learning
and TeachingProgramme.:- http://www.jisc.ac.uk/dner/programmes/projects/
We are one of the DNER projects which is developing Information Skills
learning and teaching materials for use within VLEs.We are collaborating
closely with academic staff and learning technology staff within our
institution and with partner institutions, which includes the NHS.
Of interest to our project is how do lecturing staff guide students to
making use of reading materials within their VLE courses that traditionally
would be given out as reading lists for students to access via the library?
Do they drop in a link to the electronic library catalogue?
Are they collaborating with their resource centres /libraries to embed for
example the subscription services of electronic full text journals, CD-ROM
information databases or web delivered information databases?
Are they including in VLEs Key Information skills learning materials to
enable students effectively retrieve information from the vast array of
electronic resources out there on the Internet?

I think this is an important point that Peter makes, in the west
midlands (I work for west mids RSC) there seems to be a definate
geographical pattern to VLE selection. This is often linked to early
adopting colleges and to which system the local university is using.
While this should not be the main reason for selecting one system over
another it certainly helps in terms of collaborating, support, and makes
life tutors or students working at more than one local institution or
moving from one to another

Subject: Re: Which VLE
I think a major consideration when purchasing a LVE/MLE apart
from all the valid points that have been made so far is recognition of
the systems being used by other institutions in your locality. Certainly
here at Henley, we have several lecturers teaching on courses at
Coventry University and use the Uni's VLE to deliver course material,
grades etc. This plus the drive towards local collaboration would
suggest that the use of similar systems would be an advantage from a
usability point of view. I would'nt look forward to having to support
lecturers as they struggle to come to terms with 2 or 3 different
systems!
