TWO SHORT COURSES ON TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne
The Transport Engineering Group of the Department of Civil Engineering,
University of Newcastle, is offering two short courses on Traffic Management
Techniques. These short courses can be taken singly as part of continuing
professional development or may contribute to a part-time MSc degree
(contact [log in to unmask] for further details). The first course,
which runs from lunchtime on 29 October to lunchtime on 31 October and is
presented by Professor Michael Bell, focuses on management and modelling
issues. The second course, which runs from lunchtime on 26 November to
lunchtime on 28 November and is presented by Roger Bird, focuses on design
and assessment issues.
The first course introduces traffic management and its objectives, defines
traffic variables, looks at sensors for their measurement, covers the theory
and practice of traffic signal control, looks at traffic management for
motorways, goes into the theory and application of microscopic, mesoscopic
and macroscopic traffic simulation, culminating with instruction in the use
of the VISSIM microscopic traffic simulator.
The second course concentrates on junction capacity assessment, junction
design, road space reallocation, and traffic calming. Traffic impact
assessment is reviewed, along with the principles of design for various
types of road junction, and current UK design standards and practice. The
needs of non-motorised road users are considered. There will be a
demonstration of the application of the VISSIM microscopic traffic simulator
to the design and assessment of traffic calming.
Each short course consists of 24 hours of lecture and software
demonstration. The cost for each course is £430 (reduced to £750 for both
courses) to include three lunches, coffee and tea during breaks, two
dinners, and course notes. To register, contact [log in to unmask] (tel:
+44 191 222 7683, fax: +44 191 222 8352), who will also provide a list of
hotels with which the University has preferential rates.
