PHANTOMS
An Exhibition By Eric Fong
Friday 19th October - Sunday 2nd December 2001
In Europe's only surviving 19th century operating theatre, a site-
specific exhibition exploring perceptions of the body in relation to
loss, trauma, and absence. Fong's work presents ephemeral body
fragments in desubstantiated space, highlighting the disjuncture
between the visual and somatic perceptions that exist in the phantom
limb phenomenon experienced by many amputees. Link to Eric Fong's web

Eric Fong has an exhibition at the Ludwig Museum, Budapest from
October 23, 2001, part of an international multi-site project curated
by Canadian/Hungarian curator Nina Czegledy. The focus of this
project is to examine the effects of digital technology on

Operations Past and Present
Professor Harold Ellis (Guy's, King's & St Thomas' School of
Biomedical Sciences)
Wednesday 24th October, 2.30 pm (Half term event)
The author of "Operations that Made History" discusses the history of
surgery at St Thomas' Hospital, drawing on his own experience's as a
NHS surgeon to illuminate the hazards and techniques of operations
before the age of anaesthetics and antiseptics.

Sunday 4th November, 2.30pm
An illustrated lecture on the body-snatchers who procured corpses for
medical dissection, working hand in glove with renowned surgeons such
as Sir Astley Cooper, until public outcry led to the dreaded
Anatomy Act.
