A one-day workshop
Managing in the Middle
Friday 22nd June 2001
University of Greenwich (in the former Royal Naval College)
9.30 am to 4.00 pm
£95
Organised by The School of Post Compulsory Education and Training
(PCET)
Middle managers have been compared to traffic police at a road
intersection - channelling information in all directions, helping
things to run smoothly and safely, anticipating and assessing
problematic situations and making fair judgements. Being a middle
manager is possibly the most difficult role in any organisation. In
educational institutions people find themselves in management
positions but have had little preparation for their role. In this
seminar you will explore how to be an effective 'manager in the
middle'.
This seminar is appropriate for those new to management or supervisory
roles in universities or further education colleges.
Attending this seminar will help you to
· Examine the particular characteristics and tensions of 'managing in
the middle'
· Identify the skills required to be an effective middle manager
· Identify your own strengths and areas for development as a manager
· Apply and use some current ideas about leadership and management
in your own work as a manager
The session will be led by Jane Andrews, of The School of Post
Compulsory Education and Training at the University of Greenwich.
