Employability: the Role of Games, Simulations and
Case Studies

17 - 19 July 2001

Annual Conference of the Society for the
Advancement of Games and Simulations in
Education and Training

at the University of Leeds, a joint
collaboration between SAGSET and the Context
Project

The conference is a forum for the discussion of
the use of games, simulations and case studies
in education and training. The Context project,
which promotes the use of case materials and
simulations in higher education, has been
instrumental in developing many such materials.
This year's conference is
on the theme of 'Employability and the
development of Key Skills.' Our aim is to
discuss ways in which the use of games,
simulations and case studies develops students
and employees. The conference will provide a
venue for the presentation of papers about
design as well as an opportunity to explore the
use of existing games and simulations with
colleagues in related areas. The kinds of
activities considered are:

Games
Simulations
Role Play Exercises
Icebreakers and Warm Ups
Case Studies
Experiential Learning Activities

Keynote speakers include Professor Henry
Ellington, Robert Gordon University who has
worked with and written extensively about Games
and Simulations and Professor Lee Harvey who has
written about the changing world of graduate
career opportunities and the knowledge, skills
and attributes they will need to acquire jobs
and have a successful working life.

Besides the Keynote sessions there will be both
presentations about the role of games,
simulations and case studies in promoting the
development of skills and the provision of the
experience of the world of work and interactive
sessions which will give participants a flavour
of games, simulations and case studies.

A range of topics will be covered in the
parallel sessions including:
Widening Access and the place of Simulations and
Gaming
The use of the Case Method in large and diverse
undergraduate programmes
Employability and the development of Key Skills
Making Skills & Employability credible through
the use of simulations
Developing employability through serving the
local community
Using the design and siting of a museum for
developing multi-disciplinary employability
projects
Motivation and employability
Optimising the learning available from
simulations and games used in University level
skill
development programmes
Lifelong learning and the importance of group
work case studies and simulation exercises:
Japanese and Korean perceptions
The contribution of National Catering Business
Games to study at undergraduate and postgraduate
levels
The Buying Game - Simulating the procurement
process
The continuing dilemma facing staff at
Riflestead University: A Case Study Analysis
The Survival Game or Can You keep Smiling During
Your First Year of Teaching and Learning in
Higher Education
Science Based Games and Simulations for
enhancing employability
