Subject: Introduction etc.
Dear All,
An introduction first. My name is Ron Hogg. I am the manager of the
Slavonic Eastern & Central European Acquisitions department of the British
Library, based at Boston Spa in West Yorkshire. I am researching for a
part-time PhD at Leeds. My topic is the economics of the distribution of
post-1991 Russian Federation periodicals. There has been quite a lot of
research on what happened to books and broadcast media but hardly anything
on periodicals.
My research is not qualitative in the sense that is being used on this list,
I must confess. I am however interested in reading what the various list
members have to say from a professional point of view, as these are the
areas which should be served (if possible given the constraints of
availability and affordability) by my department's acquisitions policy so as
to ensure that research material can be available for members of the
academic community without unreasonable delay.
A question was raised about the Akademiia Turizma in St Petersburg.
I cannot find this on any of the usual Russian search engines. The
address also does not figure in the database of institutions' addresses
I use here for work purposes (over 2500 from the Russian Federation),
which is compiled from address lists etc received at the British Library
or which are encountered while seeking out information for our readers.
My department specialises in the acquisition of periodicals, so any
reasonable requests by list members for current journal titles which are not
at present held by the British Library (general URL below, public catalogue
at http://blpc.bl.uk/ <http://blpc.bl.uk/> ) will be reviewed quickly and as
favourably as possible within the constraints of my department's budget.
Ron Hogg
