I can confirm the comments below about Finereader
being the best there is for Cyrillic. I find the free
version (Sprint) that comes with the scanner works just
fine. Believe it or not, it also offers 40 other languages
including the Baltics, virtually all Slavonic, and also
Chechen, Crimean Tatar, Kabardian and Ossetian.
The whole thing loads in about 10 seconds!
Another list member states that this software was
produced specifically for Cyrillic.
I purchased Finereader together with an Acer scanner.

FineReader is great, even the version that comes bundled with some
scanners. The Mac version they announced long ago seems to be only
vaporware, so on a Mac, you would have to run it under VirtualPC.
This is no great problem, just scan into TIFF files on the Mac side
and then switch to the Windows side and OCR with FineReader.
